xRM concentrates on three areas of business: application hosting, software development, and consulting. In our application-hosting function, we are responsible for providing dependable cloud-based software applications to thousands of users, and managing rapid and secure transfers of copious amounts of user data. To do this well requires a combination of hardware, software, expertise, forethought, and vigilance. Our data centers embody that combination.
In order to ensure continued maximum functionality and security for our customers and ourselves during our own growth, we utilize two data centers. The first is a tier-IV facility. Tier IV is the highest quality specification for data centers. This is our primary data center for hosting services. We chose the tier 4 data center because of its overwhelming thoroughness of design, including its numerous security and reliability features. The second is a separate disaster-recovery (DR) site.
Our primary site, the tier-IV facility, is a state-of-the-art data center built from the ground up by HP’s prominent EYP Mission Critical Facilities group. Here are some of the tier 4 data center’s important features:
Bandwidth and Capacity: xRM currently has an OC192 internet connection to the internet backbone and over 40 TB of disk capacity. We can continue to expand into about 100,000 square feet of available facility area to house additional servers and other hardware as demand grows.
Location: The facility’s location is strategically chosen to ensure its safety. Situated on a solid granite foundation, the tier 4 data center is removed from any major fault line in order to protect it from seismic activity. For increased safety, the whole facility is reinforced with seismic bracing both inside and out. Each storage rack is braced in a six-way configuration, securing it to its granite slab foundation. In the event of an earthquake, the racks would move in tandem with the building, preventing them from tipping.
Fire Detection and Suppression: The data center employs a Very Early Smoke Detection Alarm (VESDA) system. The modern VESDA system constantly examines particles in the air, searching for any trace of smoke or fire. The data center hosting service can detect a threat well before a human normally would. Not only does the VESDA system have the ability to identify a problem in its early stages, but it can also neutralize the threat automatically before it becomes harmful to any person or equipment. Unlike data centers that utilize water-based fire suppression systems, which can ultimately harm the very equipment they are supposed to protect, this facility is equipped with DuPont™ FM-200® Waterless Fire Suppression Systems. The FM-200 clean agent fire suppression is completely safe to use on the hardware in the event of a fire.
Cooling: While perhaps not something you would immediately think of when imagining a data center, a reliable cooling system is critically important. If a cooling system goes down, temperatures rapidly increase in a room filled with hundreds or thousands of computers. This could significantly damage or even destroy electronic equipment carrying customer data. xRM servers are located at a data center that has at least one backup system for everything. It houses four cooling towers despite only needing three. There is an onsite water reservoir to guarantee a constant supply of water for the cooling systems in case of an external supply problem such as a burst main. The facility takes an additional precaution that some data centers do not: a cooling system tied directly to a backup power source. The backup generators are capable of powering the fully operational data center.
Data Backup: In order to ensure data storage safety, we have a rigorous backup schedule. Our servers are backed up at four different periodic increments. We initially back up every two hours. We back up our data to disk and tape, and vault both offsite.
Redundancy: Redundancy ensures that services continue in the event of individual hardware or software component failure. Failover systems cover software such as SQL servers, mail servers, CRM servers, SharePoint, and OCS. Hardware redundancy allows us to swap out or upgrade hardware components transparent to network demand. We currently rely on the best Dell, Cisco, F5, and McAfee equipment, but are not limited to our current hardware in any way. Having two separate data centers provides top level security in case of unlikely total loss of one location.
